Sufiyan Abas

Full time accountant pursuing the ACCA. Just wanna share with people on how I manage my finances. I don’t know if you would find it useful but if you have any better ideas or would like to share on how you manage your finances, please let me know because I believe that we could help young adults manage their finances.

1. “I can use my card!”

Keeping a good credit score is important if you want to apply for loans for your car or your house but for young adults, it’s so easy for them to misuse the credit card and if you don’t pay your bills on time, your credit score is going to be horrible.

2. “I can start saving for retirement later on in life.”

Sure you can start saving later on in life. However, if you start saving earlier, you get to retire earlier. The choice is yours.

3. “I deserve some nice things.”

Everyone deserves nice things but most 20 year olds would spend more than they earn. They have to learn to live within their means.

4. “I don’t make enough money for savings.”

There is no such thing as not making enough for savings. Try to save at least 10% of your monthly income even if it’s a mere RM100 a month. People tend to spend unnecessarily on food delivery, UBER rides and cigarettes to name a few. Those are all a burn on disposable incomes.

5. “I’ll start investing when I get a promotion.”

A good way to build wealth is through investing in the stock market or in Unit Trust. Many young professionals don’t do this as they feel like it’s a waste of money or they feel that it would be a burden to them. What they don’t know is that by investing, you can double or triple your money within a few years.
